Beginner’s Guide to Neurotoxins: What to Expect Before, During & After

ree

Thinking about smoothing frown lines or softening crow’s feet, but not sure what the process really looks like? Neurotoxin treatments are quick, customizable appointments that relax specific facial muscles to soften expression lines. If you’re new to all of this, here’s a clear, step-by-step guide to what happens before, during, and after your first visit—so you can feel prepared and confident.

Before: Your consultation and candidacy: Your experience at So Young Aesthetics begins with a focused consultation. We’ll ask about your goals (for example, “I look tired,” “my 11s are deep,” or “I want a very natural result”), review your medical history, and examine how your muscles move when you make expressions. It’s important to share any neuromuscular conditions, recent procedures, allergies, or if you’re pregnant or breastfeeding (in which case treatment should be postponed). Together we’ll choose areas to treat and discuss whether a subtle “micro-dose” approach or a more comprehensive plan fits your goals.

Before: Simple prep for the best result: There’s not much to do beforehand, but a few small steps help minimize bruising. For 3–5 days before your appointment, consider pausing non-essential blood-thinning supplements like fish oil, garlic, ginkgo, and high-dose vitamin E (only with your doctor’s okay). Avoid alcohol the day before. Come with clean skin (no heavy makeup or skincare acids on treatment areas), and plan your visit at least two weeks before major events to allow time for results to settle.

During: What the appointment feels like: A typical neurotoxin appointment takes about 15–30 minutes. We’ll cleanse the skin, mark precise points, and use an ultra-fine needle to place tiny amounts where the muscle activity creates lines. Most patients describe the sensation as quick pinches. Ice, a vibration tool, or topical numbing can be used if you like. Dosing is measured in “units,” and it’s customized by area and muscle strength; your provider will explain what they recommend and why. You’ll be able to return to most normal activities right away.

Right after: The first few hours: Expect small pink bumps or pinpoint marks at the injection sites that fade within 15–30 minutes, and occasionally mild swelling or a light headache the first day. To keep the product where it should be, avoid rubbing or massaging the treated areas, skip tight hats/headbands over freshly treated forehead lines, and try to stay upright for the first 4 hours. Hold off on strenuous workouts, saunas, hot yoga, or facials for 24 hours.

Days 1–14: The results timeline: Neurotoxins don’t work instantly. Many people notice the first softening around days 2–3, with full results by days 7–14. Lines caused by expressions will relax; etched-in, deeper lines may continue to improve gradually as your skin isn’t repeatedly creasing. If this is your very first treatment, we often schedule or welcome a quick check-in around the two-week mark. Minor touch-ups can fine-tune symmetry or expression if needed.

How long it lasts & how to maintain: Results typically last about 3–4 months, varying by metabolism, dose, and treatment area. High-movement areas (like the forehead) may wear off a bit faster for some people. Staying on a regular schedule often keeps the look smoother and can even help you use fewer units over time because the muscles aren’t “training” those lines as strongly.

Side effects & safety—what to know: When performed by a trained medical professional, neurotoxins have a strong safety record. Temporary side effects can include small bruises, tenderness, or a brief headache. Rare effects like unintended drooping of the eyelid or brow can occur; these are usually temporary and lessen as the product wears off. Choosing an experienced injector, using precise dosing, and following aftercare instructions are the best ways to reduce risks.

Cost, customization, and your next steps: Pricing is typically per unit or by treatment area, and we’ll review a transparent estimate before we begin. Your plan is fully customizable—from subtle “baby” dosing that keeps lots of movement to a more polished, well-rested finish. If you’re curious whether neurotoxins are right for you, the easiest next step is a consultation. We’ll map your unique expressions, answer every question, and build a plan that fits your goals, timeline, and comfort level.

When you’re ready to get started, book your visit with So Young Aesthetics and we’ll guide you every step of the way—before, during, and after—so your first neurotoxin treatment feels simple, safe, and rewarding.
